Hyundai Pulls The Plug On Santro

Hyundai Motors India has pulled the plug on the entry-level Santro hatchback due to low demand and the upcoming safety norm mandating six airbags from October 2022. Recently, the carmaker has also discontinued the diesel iterations of Grand i10 Nios and Aura due to the same reason.

Originally, the Hyundai Santro entered production in 1998 and was re-introduced as a more premium alternative to the Eon hatchback in 2018 after a break of almost four years since its previous version was axed from the Indian market. It was priced between Rs 4.90 lakh to Rs 6.42 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) before discontinuation.

Hyundai offered the Santro with a 1.1-liter petrol engine with just 69PS and 99Nm of output figures. Transmission duties were taken care of by a 5-speed manual and AMT transmission. It was also available with a factory-fitted CNG kit, limited to the Magna and Sportz manual variants.

With the discontinuation of the Hyundai Santro, the Grand i10 Nios has become the entry-level offering for the Korean carmaker in India, which is priced between Rs 5.39 – 8.02 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up against the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It comes with three engine options: 83PS 1.2-litre petrol, 69PS 1.2-litre petrol-CNG, and 100PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol.
