Maruti Suzuki to reopen Manesar, Haryana plant

Know about it

The Haryana government waved a green flag to Suzuki to get operations going at an even pace on a one-shift basis. The Government allowed the manufacturer to work with 4696 employees. Granting this permission on Wednesday (22 April) did grab some eyeballs. This could be considered as first and only such approvals for non-medical industries at a scale this large.

Another provision was allowing Suzuki to operate on 50 vehicles while strictly shutting the doors to any other service facility. The Manesar plant is located just outside the Gurugram Municipality limits. The stock market reacted positively to this news with the company stocks seeing a 3.34% raise and Nifty recording a 2.29%.

On the contrary, though, the company's chairman RC Bhargava declined the notably stated that the company will commence operation only once they can maintain consistent production numbers. To be precise he said-

"We will start operations whenever we can maintain continuous production and sell it, which is not possible at this point in time."

Hence though legally enabled, MSI will still not resume production for some time as it now seems.

Author's take

This is not really a bias generating article but there could be some views on whether we should really allow business operations as of now. Yes, the times are hard for the economy and there's not much light at the end of the tunnel.

Is it really important to take such immediate measures? This is a question that could be pondered upon. But honestly, the analysis is much better left to the government and the economic experts. My take is preferred to eradicating the chances of spread, limiting it a minimum and then consider these factors which are not trivial but definitely can be delayed.

The nationwide lockdown that was implemented in India commencing from 23rd march has now been active for 30+ days. Though the cases are increasing quite consistently, the concern is now being addressed upon which is the question of economy.

Under these conditions, it seemed necessary to restart some business operations under the strict provision. Under these guidelines, even the non-essential businesses (not complexes or malls but discrete shops) were allowed to operate at 50% staff in non-hotspot areas. Under such circumstances came a rather unexpected decision by Haryana government to allow Suzuki to restart operations in Manesar plant.
