Let’s quickly delve into all the necessary details of the Ola Roadster X and X+: –

  • The Roadster X is offered with three battery pack options: 2.5kWh, 3.5kWh and 4.5kWh, while the Roadster X+ gets two battery pack options: 4.5kWh and 9.1kWh. Here’s a look at their detailed specifications: –
VariantPeak PowerTop Speed (Claimed)Range (Claimed)
Roadster X 2.5kWh7kW105 kmph140 km
Roadster X 3.5kWh7kW118 kmph196 km
Roadster X 4.5kWh7kW128 kmph252 km
Roadster X+ 4.5kWh11kW125 kmph252 km
Roadster X+ 9.1kWh11kW125 kmph501 km

  • The Roadster X and X+ are powered by a mid-mounted motor with a chain drive, rated at 7kW for the Roadster and 11 kW for the Roadster X+.
  • The battery packs of Roadster X+ are made of Ola’s “4680 Bharat Cell“, which is not only bigger in size than the conventional cell but also has more energy density.
  • The motor, battery and BMS are integrated into one unit (Gen 3 platform). Compared to the Gen-2 platform, this integration results in a 14% reduction in weight while simultaneously increasing power output. It also features industry-first flat cables for internal circuitry, offering several advantages over round cables, including reduced quantity and lower weight.
  • In terms of performance, the Roadster can complete the 0 to 40 kmph run in just 3.1 seconds (Roadster X+ takes only 2.8 seconds) before hitting a top speed of up to 125 kmph. Having said that, the top speed varies across the variants, with the 2.5kWh model reaching 105kmph and the 3.5kWh and 4.5kWh variants topping out at 118 kmph. On the other hand, the Roadster X+ has a top speed of 125 kmph.
  • The claimed range also differs, offering 140km for the base model, 196km for the mid-spec variant, and 252km for the highest-spec version.
  • The Roadster X+ claims a range of 252km for the 4.5kWh variant and 501 km for the 9.1kWh trim.
  • Ola will offer the bikes with a 1kW home charger as standard. Meanwhile, customers will also get the option to upgrade to a slightly faster 2kW charger.
  • Based on the modular double cradle frame (compatible with various battery configurations), the Ola Roadster X features a naked streetfighter design with a muscular fuel tank-like structure, sharp LED headlamps and a sleek tail section, giving it an aggressive look.
  • Other features include an all-LED lighting system, a 4.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, cruise control, advanced regen tech, reverse mode, tyre pressure alert, three riding modes (Eco, Normal & Sport ) and much more.
  • The bike also features a small storage compartment, where the charger can be stored along with other small items.
  • Underpinnings comprise a conventional telescopic fork up front and a twin shock absorber at the rear, suspended on the 17-inch alloy wheels.
  • For braking, the bike gets a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear, with a single-channel Antilock Braking System (ABS) in the Roadster X+ variant. Interestingly, it comes equipped with brake-by-wire technology that eliminates the need for a physical brake cable as it takes input through a sensor to determine braking efficiency.
  • The bike has a ground clearance of 180mm.
  • Available in five colour options: White, Blue, Green, Silver and Anthracite.
  • Bookings for the bikes are now open.
  • Deliveries for the Roadster will begin in mid-March, while for the Roadster X+ deliveries will start in the next quarter.
  • In the electric bike segment, the Ola Roadster X will face competition from the Oben Rorr and Revolt RV400.

Author’s Take

With the Roadster X and X+, Ola aims to target customers opting for 100cc and 125cc bikes by offering a simple yet modern design, advanced features, and an impressive range—making it an attractive choice for daily commuters seeking a cost-effective option. However, cracking the electric bike segment is no easy task, as brands like Oben, Revolt, and Tork have struggled in the past. In fact, Tork Motors, which was backed by Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola Electric, had to shut down operations due to financial constraints and low sales. Only time will tell how Ola performs in this competitive market.
