2020 Mahindra Thar is the most awaited launch of this year. It was supposed to be unveiled in early months of 2020. But unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it. However, Mahindra has now finally decided to reveal the all-new Mahindra Thar on 15th of August when India will complete 73 years as an independent nation.
Earlier, Mahindra hasn't intentionally brought the new Thar to Auto Expo 2020 as the company believed that the off-roader is so special that it requires an independent event for itself only. But ongoing pandemic has ruined the Mahindra's grand debut plan. Now, the most anticipated SUV will be unveiled through a live webcast on the official Mahindra Thar website and through its social media handles.
2020 Mahindra Thar: What can we expect?
Mahindra Thar was in the testing phase for more than a year. During this phase, it was spied many times. Hence, we have an idea of what we can expect from its next-generation model.
The 2020 Thar will be carrying an all-new design and features without compromising its traditional characteristic. It will be longer than before in size. At the front, it will sport a new seven-slat grille, redesigned bumpers at both ends, fender-mounted LED DRLs, LED taillights, all-new alloy wheels, and a Stepney mounted on the rear door.
On the inside, the tough Mahindra offroader is likely to get automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment, steering mounted controls, removable factory fitted hardtop and front-facing seats.
The Thar will also feature a host of advanced safety features for the first time. It includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, disc brakes on all four wheels, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder as standard features across the range. A reverse camera and traction control might also be offered with higher trims.
Engine
The new Thar is expected to be offered with both petrol and diesel engines. The diesel mill is likely to be a 2.2-liter unit from the Scorpio, which produces a max power output of 140PS and 360Nm of peak torque. The petrol motor will be from Mahindra's new stallion family. Possibly, it could be a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit. Both engines are most likely to be offered with an option of manual and automatic transmission.
Thar would come in both 2WD as well as 4WD configuration.
Price Range & Rival
Due to all these significant updates, we expect it to charge an ample premium over its previous model. The pricing could start somewhere around Rs 10 Lakhs (up from 9.6 Lakhs for predecessor Thar). It will compete with the upcoming New Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny, which might be launched later this year.
