Here Are The Most Fuel Efficient CNG Cars Available In India In 2021

When it comes to alternative fuels, CNG (compressed natural gas) is the most preferred choice among Indian buyers. Also, with frequently fluctuating conventional fuel prices (petrol/diesel), a surge in demand for CNG vehicles has been registered in various parts of the country thanks to their more frugal nature, affordability, and low maintenance. So, if you are also planning to buy one, here are the top 10 most fuel-efficient CNG cars available in the Indian market: – 

1. Maruti Suzuki WagonR  

Maruti Suzuki WagonR is one of the most selling CNG-powered cars in the country. While the brand offers the WagonR with two petrol engines (1.0-litre & 1.2-litre), the factory fitted CNG fit is only available with the smaller displacement engine. Here're the specifications: – 

The WagonR CNG is offered in two variants – LXi (Rs 5.60 lakh) and LXi Optional (Rs 5.67 lakh).

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto 

Maruti Suzuki Alto is the most affordable CNG car among all. Available in two variants- LXi and LXi (O), they have been priced at Rs 4.56 lakh and 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

3. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso  

Maruti's alleged micro-SUV, the S-Presso is on the third spot in our list. It also comes with a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol motor that generates 60PS and 78Nm on CNG mode. Let's take a look at the detailed engine specifications: – 

The S-Presso CNG is available in four variants – LXI, LXI (O), VXI and VXI (O) variants that retails from Rs 4.96 lakh to Rs 5.26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

4. Hyundai Santro 

Hyundai's entry-level Santro is the most torquiest CNG car in the compact hatchback segment. The brand offers the Santro CNG in two variants – Magna and Sportz, which are priced at Rs 5.92 lakh and Rs 6.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively. 

5. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Celerio CNG shares its powertrain with the WagonR. That said, it is also powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that comes with a 60-litres factory-fitted CNG kit and delivers a claimed range of 30.47km per kilogram. 

Like most of the other cars, the availability of CNG powertrain is also limited to the mid-spec variants of Celerio- VXi and VXi (O), which comes at a price tag of Rs 5.85 lakh and Rs 5.90 lakh, respectively.

6. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios 

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is the only mid-sized hatchback on the list. It uses a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that is only available with a manual transmission (AMT also available with non-CNG variants). This combination has an ARAI-rated economy of 28.5km/kg.  

People looking for Grand i10 Nios CNG will have to shell out Rs 6.84 lakh for Magna and Rs 7.38 lakh for Sportz trim.

7. Hyundai Aura

Hyundai’s 1.2-litre petrol engine also does duty in the Aura sub-4-meter sedan. However, its mileage is 0.50 less than the Nios. That could be attributed to its long size & more weight than the Grand i10 Nios. It is priced at Rs 7.56 lakh (ex-showroom)

8. Marti Suzuki Dzire Tour S 

Tour S is the fleet version of the Maruti Dzire subcompact sedan. It is widely used for commercial purpose. While the standard Dzire is currently in its third generation (facelift) form, the Tour S is based on the 2nd-generation's facelift model. 

The CNG powered Dzire Tour S is priced at Rs 6.36 lakh for the STD variant and Rs 6.40 lakh for the STD (O) trim.

9. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 

Maruti Ertiga's CNG model is the most frugal MPV currently on sale in the country. It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine that also powers many other Maruti models such as Vitara Brezza, XL6, Ciaz, and S-Cross. However, using it on CNG mode produces lesser engine outputs.  

The Ertiga CNG is only available in VXI trim that retails at Rs 9.36 lakh (ex-showroom).
