We all know that Hyundai Motors is gearing up to enter into the micro-SUV segment with the AX1 (codename) that will be positioned against the Mahindra KUV100 NXT and the upcoming Tata HBX. The brand is testing the SUV for quite some time, but the recent spy images confirming the design elements as recently seen in the leaked teaser images.

Quirky Design
The spy images reveal the AX1 in production guise. It will feature a quirky design with some freakish styling elements upfront like a rectangular grille with triangular elements, circular projector headlamps (surrounded by LED ring) placed lower on the bumper, and an upper lighting cluster beneath the bonnet line that will probably house the turn indicators. Interestingly, the Tata HBX will also feature a split headlamp setup as well.
Thanks to its upright stance & square silhouette, the AX1 looks like a compact utility vehicle. It gets squared-out wheel arches, blacked-out alloy wheels, C-Pillar door handles, roof rails, and a shark fin antenna. The rear features triangular patterning LED modules forming multiple circles in an array. It also gets an integrated roof-mounted spoiler and a secondary lighting cluster set lower on the bumper. They are likely to house reverse indicator and rear fog lamps. In terms of dimensions, it will be smaller than the Hyundai Venue.

Expected Features
The interior of the Hyundai AX1 is still under wraps, but we assume it to come equipped with goodies such as a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto smartphone integration support, BlueLink connected car technology, auto climate control with rear AC vents, steering-mounted audio controls, a wireless phone charger, keyless entry and go, etc. Safety is likely to be covered by dual airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and more.

Expected Powertrain
Hyundai is expected to offer the AX1 micro-SUV with same the engine options as the Grand i10 Nios – 83PS 1.2-litre petrol, 75PS 1.2-litre diesel engines, and 100PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. All these engines are likely to come with a manual gearbox as standard. However, both the 1.2-litre engines could also get an optional 5-speed AMT. We believe Hyundai will also offer the iMT clutchless transmission with the production-spec AX1 mini SUV.
When will it launch in India?
The AX1 is supposed to be unveiled in the coming months, and we are eagerly waiting for that moment. Hyundai will launch it first in its home country, followed by other international markets. We believe Hyundai AX1 to go on sale by early 2022 in India.
