Toyota Recalled 9,498 Units of Urban Cruiser Over Possible Airbag Issue

Toyota Kirloskar Motors has recalled the 9,498 units of Urban Cruiser sub-4-meter SUV over a possible faulty driver-side airbag module assembly. As per the brand, the affected units were manufactured between 28th July 2020, and 11th February 2021. Toyota will soon contact the owners of the affected vehicles to ask them to bring their Urban Cruiser for inspection at their nearest authorized service centres and if found necessary, the faulty component will be replaced free of cost.

Till the Toyota dealers contact the Urban Cruiser owners, customers can also check if their vehicle is affected by a recall campaign. For that, customers will be required to enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)/frame number in the section given in this link

For the people not in know, Toyota Urban Cruiser is a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. However, there’s no word on whether the Maruti's SUV is also affected by the same issue.

What is the airbag module assembly?

An airbag module controls the airbag's deployment and stores crash data. If your airbag module is faulty, your vehicle's airbags may not deploy in the case of an accident.

About Toyota Urban Cruiser

Available in three variants (Mid, High, and Premium), the Toyota Urban Cruiser is powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine that produces 105PS and 138Nm of maximum output. It comes paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter gearbox. The automatic variants also get a mild-hybrid system as standard.

Like the powertrain, the Urban Cruiser also shares its features list with the Vitara Brezza. The notable features include LED projector headlamps, dual-function LED DRLs, LED fog lamps, 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, push-button start/stop, rain-sensing wipers, auto climate control, cruise control and many more. On the safety front, it gets dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, speed alert system, hill hold control (AT only), rear parking sensors with reversing camera, etc. Since it is a rebadged version of the Vitara Brezza, it should also offer a 4-star safety rating as the Vitara Brezza.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV is priced between Rs 8.40 lakh and Rs 11.30 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In the subcompact SUV segment, it locks horns with the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza,  Nissan Magnite, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and Renault Kiger.
