Toyota is planning to introduce the new 48V mild-hybrid technology for its diesel-powered pickup trucks and SUVs. The Japanese carmaker already offers self-charging strong-hybrid engines in India in select petrol models, such as Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross and Vellfire. Now, the upcoming mild-hybrid system will be coupled with Toyota’s 2.8-litre diesel engine.
Toyota’s new 48V mild-hybrid system features three major components: – a 48V lithium-ion battery, a belt-driven electric starter generator that replaces the conventional alternator in the engine, and a 48V to 12V DC-DC converter for components that operate on 12V systems like air conditioning.
Toyota claims that this new hybrid tech is light-weighted and can be fitted into existing engines seamlessly. It has been designed with off-roading in mind, ensuring it won’t compromise the performance and towing capabilities of the vehicles.
