The Toyota Fortuner Facelift carries a massive premium of up to Rs 3 lakh over the previous model. For this added cost, the new Fortuner gets a host of cosmetical updates, some new features, and a slightly tuned diesel engine for better performance.

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift – What's New?

Being a facelift version, the 2021 Fortuner gets a new front facia with a larger mesh pattern grille, redesigned LED headlamps (incorporating LED DRLs as well), and a new front bumper with a silver skid plate.

The side and rear profile of the SUV look largely similar to the pre-facelift model except for the newly designed six-spoke monotone alloy wheels of 18-inches, updated wing mirrors, slimmer-looking LED tail lamps & redesigned rear bumper.

On the inside, the facelifted Fortuner features a larger, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility along with connected car technology (Geo-Fencing, Realtime Vehicle tracking, Walk to car & many more). Toyota has also updated the instrument cluster dials.

Besides this, it also gets a new 11-speaker JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, electrically adjustable front passenger seats, and an upgraded steering system to be lighter/heavier to offer better driving feedback.

Features of the pre-facelift model such as auto climate control, rear AC vents, auto-dimming IRVM, heat rejection glass, cooled glove box, multiple driving modes, cruise control, powered driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and keyless entry with push engine start/stop button, puddle lamps, have been carried forward. Sadly, the Fortuner still doesn't offer a sunroof.

On the safety front, the new Toyota Fortuner comes with 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, front & rear parking sensors with rear camera, electronic stability control, hill assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, and ISOFIX child seat anchorage, anti-theft alarm with ultrasonic sensor, and hill descent control (for the 4WD trims).

Toyota Fortuner Legender

The newly added Legneder variant sits at the top of Fortuner's variant line-up. Compared to the standard model, the Legender trim comes with a sportier design element, which mainly includes Lexus-like front fascia with aggressively styled bumpers, quad-LED headlamps, dynamic turn indicators, dual-tone alloy wheels, and a different design of taillamp & rear bumper.

The Fortuner Legender is only offered in the Pearl White paint scheme with contrast black roof & OVRMs.

Inside, it gets an all-black theme with maroon highlights to suit its sportier persona. Over the features of standard trim, the top-spec Legender variant also gets a hands-free tailgate opening function, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera.

The Legender variant is only being offered with the diesel-automatic 4×2 drivetrain.

Engine & Gearbox

Like the previous model, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner gets both the 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engines. However, the diesel engine has been updated for better output and improved NVH levels. Now, this CI motor delivers 204PS of maximum power and 500Nm of peak torque, making it 27PS and up to 80Nm more powerful than the pre-facelift Fortuner. The petrol engine, on the other hand, retains the same power figures 166PS/245Nm.

For transmission duties, both engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. However, the petrol engine is only available with the two-wheel drivetrain, whereas the diesel also gets the option of 4WD.

Toyota Fortuner Rivals

In the full-size SUV space, the facelifted Fortuner restores its competition with the likes of Ford Endeavour (Rs 29.99-35.45 lakh), Mahindra Alturas G4 (Rs 28.73-31.73 lakh), and MG Gloster (Rs 29.98-35.58 lakh). With the mid-life update, the Fortune has become the most expensive SUV of its segment.
