Tata Motors is set to broaden the appeal of its flagship SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, by introducing petrol-powered variants by March 2026. They are expected to get the 1.5-litre TGDi turbocharged petrol engine, previously showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo.
For those unaware, Tata showcased the 1.2-litre TGDi and 1.5-litre TGDi turbocharged petrol engines at the 2023 Auto Expo. While the 1.2-litre mill has already debuted with the Tata Curvv, the 1.5-litre motor has now been confirmed to be launched with the Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs by the end of FY26. The brand has revealed this news during its investor meeting. Hereโs a look at the specifications of this new engine: โ
Engine | 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine |
Max Power | 170 PS |
Peak Torque | 280 Nm |
Transmission | To be revealed |

While the transmission options have yet to be announced, it is expected to come with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic unit.
Currently, both of these SUVs come with a Fiat-sourced 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine (170PS/350Nm), paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Recently, the brand has acquired the licensing rights to develop this engine in-house, giving the company independent control over the engineโs usage, design changes and upgrades.
Authorโs Take
While the move to introduce a petrol engine for Harrier and Safari is welcome, Tata Motors is arguably late to the party. Rivals such as the MG Hector, Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra XUV700 already offer petrol mills. However, in the current scenarios, where diesel share is declining in urban areas and hybrid is gaining traction, we expect Tata must act swiftly to bring these variants to market before consumer attention further shifts towards hybrid and electrics.
