The much-awaited Renault Duster Hybrid has finally been launched in India at Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Duster made its debut in India earlier this year, with two turbocharged petrol engines, and now, it is also available with a self-charging strong-hybrid powertrain, making it the brand’s first HEV offering in the country, positioning it against the strong-hybrid versions of Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Victoris and Grand Vitara.

Renault Duster Hybrid: Technical Specifications
Powering the Renault Duster Hybrid is a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with a series-parallel, strong-hybrid system called E-Tech. Renault says it was developed using expertise gained from the brand’s Formula 1 energy-recovery systems, electric motors, and energy management.
The E-Tech system uses a petrol engine which works alongside two electric motors – a 49hp traction motor and a 20hp hybrid starter generator, powered by a 1.4kWh NMC 622 High-Cobalt battery (247V) featuring direct refrigerant cooling. Together, they produce a combined output of 160PS. The engine can also drive the wheels and support battery charging when required. That said, it doesn’t require any external charging system.

For transmission duties, it features an 8-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which is essentially a specialised multi-mode clutchless transmission system that manages the interaction between the engine and electric motors. It uses fixed gear ratios and can automatically shift between them depending on the driving condition, i.e., electric mode, engine mode, and a combination of both.

Renault Duster Hybrid: Fuel Efficiency (Mileage)
Renault claims that the Duster Hybrid can ply in EV mode for nearly 80% of the time in city driving, helping it to deliver an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 29 km/l. With this, Renault claims the Duster can cover over 1400km on a single tank of fuel.
Improved Suspension Setup
Compared to the non-hybrid versions of the SUV, the Duster Hybrid also features Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) suspension, designed to automatically adjust damping force according to road conditions to improve the overall ride comfort over bad surfaces, while maintaining better body control and stability at higher speeds.
More Premium Experience
The Duster Hybrid also gets signature illuminated “Duster” lettering at the front, along with new Dune Brown leatherette upholstery and redesigned front-seat headrests for improved forward visibility from the second row.
Renault Duster: Other Engine Options
As mentioned above, the Duster is also available with two turbocharged petrol engines, comprising a 1-litre and a 1.3-litre unit, specifications of which are mentioned below: –

Author’s Take
With the introduction of the new hybrid powertrain, the Renault Duster has become a more desirable option for those with high daily commutes, whether in the city or on the highway, as it helps reduce fuel expenses. Furthermore, by offering improved fuel efficiency, it also compensates for the absence of a diesel engine in the Duster’s lineup.
