MG Starlight 650 Plug-in Hybrid SUV Likely To Debut On July 16

We reported earlier that JSW MG Motor is gearing up to launch its first plug-in electric hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in India, which is likely to be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 SUV. Now, the carmaker has sent us a ‘block your date’ invitation for July 16 with a tagline “New Energy Vehicle”. This suggests that the brand’s first PHEV could make its debut on this day. In fact, the design of the SUV has already been patented in India.

While the brand is yet to share official product details, but if it turns out to be the plug-in hybrid SUV, it could revolutionise the way we see the mid-size SUV segment in India, especially as it is likely to be positioned against the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.

Globally, the Wuling Starlight 560 is available in both 5-and 7-seater configurations, featuring a length of 4,745mm and a wheelbase of 2,810mm. Speaking of the powertrain, it is sold with both plug-in-hybrid and all-electric powertrains in international markets; however, we aren’t sure if the brand will also introduce its electric version in India.

For reference, its PHEV version utilises a 1.5-litre petrol engine (105PS/130Nm), paired with a front electric motor and a 20.5kWh battery pack, producing a combined output of 197PS and 230Nm. It offers 125km of pure electric range, while the WLTP combined range is rated at 1100km with its 52-litre fuel tank. On the contrary, the electric version comes equipped with a 56.7kWh battery and a front-mounted motor producing 136 S/200Nm and claims up to 500km of range.

When it comes to features, it is expected to be loaded with amenities like a floating 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.8-inch digital driver’s display, auto climate control with rear AC vents, a powered driver seat, front seat ventilation, panoramic sunroof, electronic parking brakes with auto hold, a 360-degree camera, six airbags, hill assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, and a level-2 ADAS suite.
