Mahindra has launched a new base variant of the Scorpio called S3+ at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), making the SUV more affordable for buyers. Earlier, the S5 was the entry-level trim, which is currently priced at Rs 12.68 lakh.
The Scorpio S3+ is powered by the same 2.2-liter mHawk CRDI diesel engine that comes with other variants. However, the engine has been detuned for the S3+ trim, making out 120BHP at 4000rpm and 280Nm of peak torque at 1800-2800rpm, which is 20BHP and 40Nm less than the other variants. Also, this detuned motor will come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, instead of the 6-speed manual unit.
For the people not in know, this is the same powertrain that used to drive the BS4 S7 variant. However, it was discontinued at the time of the BS6 transition.
Mahindra Scorpio S3+ – Features
Being a base variant, the S3+ only gets some of the basic set of equipment such as bulb type headlamp with follow-me-home function, steel wheels, manual AC, vinyl seat upholstery, power windows, tilt steering, remote fuel lid opening, manually adjustable outside mirrors (ORVMs) and power steering, etc. Safety, on the other hand, is taken care of by dual front airbags (driver & co-driver side), Antilock Braking System (ABS), rear parking sensors, engine immobilizer, seat belt reminder, and over-speed alert system. The Scorpio S3 Plus is available in 7-and 9-seater configuration.
Compared to the older base trim i.e. the S5, it misses out on various features, including body-colored bumpers & ORVMs, body-colored side cladding, sidestep auto door lock function, bigger bottle holders, cup holders, and fabric seat upholstery.

The next-gen model is in pipeline
This might be the last update that the Scorpio SUV has received. Because Mahindra is working on the next-gen Scorpio SUV and it has been undergoing testing for quite a while now. The new Scorpio is expected to be bigger in size with a new exterior and interior design. The testing spy shots have also revealed that it will be more feature-rich and for the first, Mahindra will equip the Scorpio with a sunroof. It will also get a new powertrain as the second-gen Thar.
The 2021 Scorpio is likely to be launched this year with a significant premium over the current model. As per the price point, it will continue to take on the likes of Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, and Kia Seltos.
