What Is R In KTM 390 Adventure R?

The R here stands for the “Rally-Ready”, indicating a more off-road focused and adventure oriented version compared to the standard 390 Adventure. This is possible due to the following additional traits and features in the R model: –

  • A more rugged suspension setup – The 390 ADV R comes with a long-travel suspension setup, offering 230mm of wheel travel at both ends. That’s up to 30mm more than the standard model. This helps the motorcycle to tackle uneven surfaces more aggressively.
  • Off-road friendly tyres: The 390 Adventure R gets the same knobby Mitas tyres as the 390 Enduro R, which enhances its off-road capabilities.
  • Better Ground Clearance – Thanks to the 21/18-inch spoke wheel setup compared to the standard model’s 21/17-inch configuration, the ground clearance has also been increased by 33mm and now stands at 270mm. This enables the bike to clear obstacles with more confidence when going off-road.
  • Taller Seat Height – At 870mm, its seat height is 40mm taller than the standard 390 Adventure, making it better suited for experienced riders and those looking for a more hardcore off-road riding stance.

Why is the KTM 390 Adventure R cheaper than the standard model?

Why is the KTM 390 Adventure R cheaper than the standard model?

Compared to the standard 390 Adventure, the R-type model misses out on the spoke tubeless wheels and instead gets conventional tube-type spoke wheels. That’s why there’s a slight price difference between the two.

Carrying The Same Heart

Powering the KTM 390 Adventure R is the same 399c, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, producing 46PS of max power and 39Nm of peak torque. Paired with a 6-speed gearbox, it is the same motor that also powers the KTM 390 Adventure X, 390 ADV and 390 Duke.

Features Onboard

When it comes to features, the bike gets the same set of electronic aids as the standard model, comprising ride-by-wire, cornering ABS, traction control, and multiple ride modes. It also gets a slipper clutch and a bidirectional quickshifter.

Author’s Take

The KTM 390 Adventure R is mainly designed for riders who are serious about off-roading and want a powerful yet lightweight adventure bike, without moving to the much costlier twin-cylinder segment. So, if your rides involve long journeys followed by rough roads, trails, broken surfaces, or proper dirt riding, this is the most capable small-capacity adventure motorcycle KTM has offered in India so far.
