Kia Sonet, Seltos and Carens Clavis To Get Hybrid Powertrain By 2029

0

Kia has confirmed that the Sonet and Carens Clavis will get a strong-hybrid powertrain in India by 2029. The Korean marque has also confirmed the arrival of a locally-developed B-segment electric SUV. Currently, there are very limited options in the mass-market strong-hybrid segment in India. Kia could certainly benefit from this opportunity if it democratises this technology across its lineup.

Kia Sonet Hybrid

For those unaware, the second-generation Kia Sonet is already in the works and is expected to be launched next year. However, the hybrid powertrain is likely to be introduced sometime in 2028 or 2029, probably with the mid-life facelift or model year update.

It is also worth noting that the current-gen Kia Sonet is based on the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform, which has its own limitations. However, the new-gen Sonet is likely to be underpinned by the K1 platform, which currently underpins the Venue and Syros. This new platform supports a wide range of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric. This will also address the lack of rear seat space in the ongoing version.

Kia Seltos and Carens Clavis Hybrid

The Kia Seltos is due to receive a strong-hybrid setup next year. While details are scarce at the moment, reports suggest that it could be based on the SUV’s existing 115PS 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The same hybrid powertrain will also be offered with the Carens Clavis MPV in its next-generation version by 2029.

Currently, both the Seltos and Carens Clavis are being offered with 1.5-litre N.A. petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine options. The Carens is also available in an all-electric avatar.

B-Segment EV

The upcoming B-segment SUV from Kia is likely to be positioned between the Syros and Seltos in its lineup and will compete with the Hyundai Bayon-based SUV. However, the Hyundai offering is likely to be available with petrol and CNG powertrains. We are still not sure whether it will also be offered in an electric version.

Kia Sorento Hybrid and Carnival Hybrid Incoming

Kia has also confirmed the arrival of the Carnival Hybrid sometime this year. While it is not official, it is likely to get the same powertrain option as the upcoming Sorento Hybrid, which is slated to be launched on September 4, 2026. Expect it to get a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor.
