Hyundai and Indian Oil Team Up to Test Hydrogen Cars in India

Hyundai has joined hands with Indian Oil (IOCL) to explore if hydrogen-powered cars can work well in India. This is part of India’s plan to reduce pollution and use cleaner fuels.

  • As part of this initiative, Hyundai has given its NEXO (a hydrogen-powered SUV) to Indian Oil for testing.
  • The car will be driven for 2 years/40,000 km to see how it performs.
  • They’ll study how much it costs to run and maintain the car. This will help decide if hydrogen cars can be affordable for Indians.
  • Currently, Hyundai offers petrol, diesel, electric and CNG cars in India. Now they’re testing hydrogen technology for India’s future Research with IIT Madras.
  • They are building a new Hydrogen Innovation Centre, which will help in developing better hydrogen technology.
  • Startups and companies can use this facility for testing

Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen fuel cell-powered car

Why is it important?

Hydrogen cars only emit water, making them very eco-friendly. If successful, this could lead to more hydrogen vehicles on Indian roads. It’s an important step toward cleaner transportation in India. This test could be the start of a new, pollution-free way of driving in India!

About Hyundai Nexo

The Hyundai Nexo is already available for sale in selected global markets. It comes with a 163PS Permanent Magnet Synchronous type electric motor that draws its charge from a hydrogen fuel cell that produces electricity by mixing oxygen with compressed hydrogen to create a flow of electrons. The only emission that comes out of the Nexo is H2O (water).

It is not only more environmentally friendly than EVs but also offers better convenience as the Hydrogen fuel cells take just five minutes to fill, as opposed to electric vehicles, which take at least an hour for a decent range. It can drive more than 600 km before needing to be filled up again.
