Volkswagen Virtus mid-size sedan will make its global debut in March, followed by its launch in the third week of May 2022, confirmed by Ashish Gupta (VW India’s brand director) in a recent interview. As part of its ‘India 2.0’ strategy, it will be Volkswagen’s second offering that will replace the decade-old Vento sedan.

For those who aren’t aware, the Volkswagen Virtus is already available on sale in many South American countries like Brazil and Argentina since 2018. However, it is due for a facelift update, and that is the model that will be brought to our shores.

2022 Volkswagen Virtus – What to expect?

Design & Features

Similar to the Kushaq-Taigun duo, the Volkswagen Virtus will share its underpinning, components, and powertrain options with the upcoming Skoda Slavia. However, its styling will be wholly distinct from the Czech sedan. It is likely to borrow some design elements with the 6th-gen VW Polo Facelift sold overseas. Like Taigun, this too could use chrome extensively to appeal Indian audience.

New Volkswagen Polo Interior (for reference)

The interior design of the Volkswagen Virtus could resemble the new-gen Polo. But its features list is likely to be borrowed from the Taigun SUV that majorly includes an all-LED lighting system, auto headlamps & wipers, 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, connected car tech, a digital instrument cluster, leatherette upholstery, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, keyless entry & go, a single-pane electric sunroof, 6 airbags, low tire pressure warning system, and more.

Powertrain

The Volkswagen Virtus is likely to get the same 115PS 1.0-litre and 150PS 1.5-litre TSI petrol engines as the Taigun, teamed up with manual and automatic transmission options.

Expected Price And Competitors

We reckon VW to price the Virtus between Rs 10-17 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, it will fight out with the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, and the upcoming Toyota Belta and Skoda Slavia.
