Tata Motors plans to offer 4ร4 drive technology in its future electric SUVs. This upgrade could be considered for models above the Nexon EV. Currently, Tata Motors has four SUVs in its portfolio: Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari, all are front-wheel driven vehicles, thus, have limited go-anywhere abilities.
Providing four wheel drive capabilities in electric vehicles is relatively simple than the ICE offerings, considering there are fewer mechanical parts and less complicated drive mechanisms of the EVs.

Speaking to PTI, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director at Tata Passenger Vehicle and Electric Vehicle division, has also revealed that the demand for 4ร4 ICE vehicles is very low in the Indian market. Hence, they have no plans to upgrade the ongoing ICE versions of Harrier and Safari with 4ร4 drivetrains. However, he didnโt rule out the possibility of a 4ร4 Harrier and Safari in their electric avatar.
For those who arenโt aware, Tata Motors strives to have at least 10 EVs on sale by 2025, including the existing electric iterations of models like the Tiago, Tigor, and Nexon, as well as all-new models.

Chandra also revealed that Tata Motors is looking to expand its CNG range in all possible segments. Currently, the carmaker has only two CNG cars on offer: Tiago and Tigor. Soon Nexon, Altroz, and Punch will also receive the CNG powertrain option.
