Ford Announces New EV Strategy; Aims 40% EV Sales By 2030

After Renault and Lamborghini, American carmaker Ford has also revealed its future strategies for electrification under the Ford+ plan. In order to not make the article boring, we will focus only on the key aspects of Ford's plan: –

  • New EV architecture: – Ford is developing two electric modular platforms- a rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. These platforms will be introduced by 2030 and will underpin electric vehicles from different segments like commercial, pick-up, rugged SUV, and full-sized family SUV divisions. These scalable EV architectures can share various powertrain and components amongst themselves.

  • EV market share: – Ford is striving to achieve at least 40% of its total global sales from electric vehicles by 2030. The brand also claims that Mustang Mach-E is getting good numbers of sales. Also, the F-150 Lightning pickup truck has recorded 70,000 bookings within just a week of its unveiling. The brand will also introduce its commercial van version by the end of 2021.

  • IonBoost battery program: – The American maker will also accelerate investments in electrification, including battery development, to more than $30 billion (nearly. Rs 21 thousand crores) by 2025. Ford will also create an Ion Park, which will be a global center of battery excellence. It will comprise more than 150 experts in battery chemistries, testing, manufacturing, and value-chain management who will boost battery range and minimize its costs. 

  • BlueOvalSK: – Ford has also partnered with the Korean company SK Innovation to form a joint venture called 'BlueOvalSK' to manufacture battery cells and arrays at two plants in the U.S. for future Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

  • Connecting Services: – Strengthening customer relationships with digitally enabled tools like Ford Pass and Lincoln Way, Ford will focus on producing vehicles that are capable of receiving over-the-air (OTA) system updates. Ford predicts that it will have 1 million vehicles on the road by the end of 2021 that will be capable of receiving OTA updates. With this, Ford is also estimating to beat Tesla in OTA vehicle numbers by July 2022. The brand has also predicted that it'll sell 33 million OTA-enabled Ford and Lincoln vehicles by 2028.
