Camouflaged Tata Safari Spied Again – A Petrol Or AWD Variant Is In Work?

Tata Motors has launched a new iteration of the Safari mid-sized SUV earlier this year, which is basically a 7-seater version of the Harrier. Currently, it is only available with a diesel engine that drives the front wheels of the car. However, the OMEGA-ARC platform of Safari is capable of incorporating electric & hybrid powertrains, along with an AWD (all-wheel-drive) setup. And interestingly, a new camouflaged prototype of the Tata Safari has been spied once again, suggesting that it might be either a 4×4 version or a petrol version of the Safari.

It is important to note that the spy model seems largely similar to the current model, which hints that the modifications have been done under the hood. However, a noteworthy point here is that if the design is no different from the standard Safari, then what was the need for such heavy camouflage? Will the SUV get any cosmetic changes?

There could be the possibility of Tata testing the new variant of the Safari with a petrol or AWD setup and the testing mule having some kind of visual differences from the existing model. However, nothing has been officially confirmed, and all these possibilities are only our assumptions.

What we do know is that Tata is working on a petrol variant of the Harrier, and the same engine is expected to be offered with the Safari as well. It will be an all-new in-house developed 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection (DI) petrol engine, which is likely to generate a maximum output of 160PS/250Nm.

Currently, the Tata Safari is available with a 2.0-liter Kryotec turbocharged diesel engine (170PS/350Nm), paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. It is majorly available in seven variantsXE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ, XZ+, and Adventure Edition, which are priced from Rs 14.99 lakh to Rs 21.81 lakh (ex-showroom).
