2021 Honda HR-V To Get A Hybrid Engine In India

Japanese carmaker Honda has recently released a teaser image of the next-generation HR-V, which is a quite popular compact SUV overseas. It will be officially unveiled on the 18th of February 2021. Along with a teaser image of the SUV, Honda has also announced that it will feature a strong hybrid powertrain in Europe.

The European-spec HR-V will employ Honda's e: HEV hybrid powertrain that we have already seen in the Jazz Hybrid & Honda City Hybrid (available in Thailand & other markets). This Hybrid mill comprises a 1.5-liter iMMD (intelligent-Multi Mode Drive) petrol engine, paired with two electric motors. In Honda City Hybrid, this petrol engine produces 98PS/127Nm, whereas the primary electric motor generates 109PS/253Nm. On the other hand, the secondary motor acts as a starter-generator. The City Hybrid is claimed to offer an exceptional fuel efficiency of over 27kmpl.

Like the Jazz & City Hybrid, the HR-V is expected to get three driving modes to switch between Hybrid, Pure EV, and Engine-only modes. In Pure EV mode, the SUV will be running on 100% electric power during low-speed cruising. In Hybrid mode, the engine & motor combine for optimum performance, whereas in Engine-only mode, the car will run solely on petrol power.

Will Honda launch the HR-V Hybrid in India?

Honda has already hinted at offering mass-market hybrid cars in India, and we believe the Japanese automaker could bring both the HR-V Hybrid & City Hybrid to our shore. In fact, its third-generation version was considered for our market and Honda even started its testing on our soil, but later the plan was not carried forward. Now, the 2021 HR-V is likely to be underpinned on the 5th-gen Honda City's platform, which makes its consideration more strong for the Indian market.

If Honda HR-V launched in India, it will lock horns with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster and the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
