Yamaha Tracer Trademark Filed; Is A New Sports Tourer In Pipeline For India?

Japanese auto giant, Yamaha Motor Company has trademarked the Tracer nomenclature in India. Currently, this nameplate is being used in several international markets for Yamaha's sports tourer motorcycles ranging between 700cc and 900cc. That said, Yamaha filing this trademark in India indicates that it is contemplating launching any of these high-performance bikes in our country.

At present, Yamaha is selling as many as six models under the Tracer brand in different markets. These include Tracer 7, Tracer 7 GT, Tracer 9, Tracer 9 GT, Tracer 900, and Tracer 900 GT. While we are not confirmed which of these models will make it to our shore, rumors are suggesting that the brand could launch a quarter-liter sports tourer in India, which could be named under the company’s Tracer brand. However, there are no official words regarding this. But in past, the brand has confirmed to launch various new & high-performance premium products in the sub-500 cc segment.

Yamaha Tourer 250

If Yamaha is really working on a 250cc version of Tracer sports tourer, then there are high chances that it could get the same powertrain and underpinnings as the MT25 naked streetfighter, which is also on the cards. Having said that, it is likely to utilize the 249cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 8-valve, DOHC, inline-twin engine that is proficient in producing 35.5PS of power and 23.6Nm of twisting force. The engine is expected to be coupled with a 6-speed transmission with a quick-shifter.

Suspension duties, on the other hand, are likely to be performed by an upside-down front fork and a monoshock. However, compared to the MT25, it could boast more ground clearance, an upright stance with better ergonomics, and a comfortable seat for long touring. It could also get tourer-specific design bits such as a wide long windshield, knuckles guards, sump guard, and prominent side fairing as the original Tracer.
