Toyota Glanza and Maruti Baleno To Get CNG Powertrain Soon

  • Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza to soon get an eco-friendly CNG fuel option.
  • Likely to be powered by Dzire’s 77PS 1.2-litre CNG powermill.
  • Expected to be priced at a premium of around Rs 95,000 over their petrol-only counterparts.

Maruti Suzuki has recently upgraded the Baleno with a rejuvenated design, new features, and updated powertrains, and so Toyota launched the Glanza facelift, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Baleno. And now reports are indicating that both these premium hatchbacks could soon receive a CNG powertrain option. With this, Glanza will become Toyota’s first CNG car in India.

As of now, both the Baleno and Glanza are powered by the same 90PS/113Nm 1.2-litre DualJet DualVVT engine, mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. The same powertrain also powers the Maruti Dzire, which has recently received an optional factory-fitted CNG kit. It produces 77PS and 98.5Nm in CNG mode and offers a claimed mileage of 31.12km/kg. Expect the Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza to get a similar CNG setup.

While the official details are yet to be revealed, we expect Toyota and Maruti to offer CNG powertrain with their respective hatchback’s mid-spec variants. They are likely to bear a price premium of around Rs 95,000 over their regular petrol-only variants.

Currently, both the Toyota Glanza and Maruti Suzuki Baleno face competition from the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz, and Volkswagen Polo. But none of them are available with a factory-fitted CNG kit. However, Altroz’s naturally-aspirated variants might get the greener fuel choice.
