Tata Altroz To Get A Punch-Sourced 7-Speed DCT Automatic Gearbox

As we have informed you multiple times earlier, the Tata Altroz is soon going to get a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Now reports are suggesting that the turbo variants will be offered with a new Punch Powertrain-sourced ‘DT-1’ 7-speed wet type dual-clutch automatic gearbox (DCT) along with the regular 5-speed manual gearbox option.

With its debut, the premium hatchback segment will become spicier as it will strengthen Altroz's position against the Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, and Volkswagen Polo. All these cars are already available with petrol-automatic combinations.

In terms of design, the Altroz turbo will look similar to the regular variants except for a turbo badging at the back. Tata could also introduce a new paint scheme, especially for the turbocharged/DCT trims.

As per the leaked details, the Altroz Turbo is likely to be offered in three variants: XT, XZ and XZ+. It is likely to command a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol variants (85PS/113Nm) which are priced from Rs 5.44 lakh to Rs 8.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Expect Tata to launch the Altroz turbo in January 2021.

Author's Take

The Tata Altroz is known for its impressive road presence & brilliant riding performance, but it's 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine feels underpowered as it is the same unit that also propels the smaller Tiago hatchback, and the Altroz is comparatively bigger and heavier than the Tiago. With the introduction of a turbocharged engine, the Altroz petrol will become a more sensible option to buy, and with the sportier DCT combination, it can emerge as a great option for the enthusiasts.
