MoRTH Standardises International Driving Permit (IDP) Process Across The Country

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a mechanism to facilitate the issuance of International Driving Permits (IDP) across all states uniformly. Previously, there were differences in the format, size, pattern, color, etc. of the IDPs being issued across Indian states. As a result, many citizens were facing difficulties with their respective IDPs abroad.

By amending this law, the format, size, colour, etc. of IDPs have been standardized across the country, and yes, it is in compliance with the convention of the International Road Traffic of 1949 (Geneva Convention) of which India is also a signatory. In addition, QR codes have been provided for linking the IDP with the driving license.

For regulatory authorities, a comparison of vehicle categories across various Conventions and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 has also been added. Email and helpline numbers will also be provided.
