Powering the 2WD version of the Mahindra Thar is a 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It makes 118PS of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque. It also gets the option of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (152PS/320Nm), mated to the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission only.
Currently, the Thar RWD is commanding a waiting period of up to 18 months, depending on the trim level and the city. According to reports, many customers are now booking the new 4X2 variant instead of the 4X4 variant, that because most of the Thar buyers’ are fond of its macho appeal, rather than of its off-road capability.
