Powering the Mahindra Scorpio Classic is a 2.2-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine from the mHawk series that makes 130PS and 300Nm, transmitting the power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. Mahindra has also claimed to stiffen the suspension system to reduce the body roll.

In the Indian market, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic can be seen as a rugged body-on-frame alternative to the Hyundai Creta, MG Hector/Hector Plus, Tata Harrier/Safari, Mahindra XUV700, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
