For those who aren't aware, the CERO is a joint venture between Mahindra Accelo and MSTC (Metal Scrap Trade Corporation, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Steel). Currently, CERO has its state-of-the-art recycling facilities in 11 cities across the country, including Pune (Maharashtra). The numbers will soon increase to 25 facilities, with new plants in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Nashik, and other cities.

As per the MoU, which was signed through the Industries, Energy, and Labour department, the CERO will set up scrapping facilities with a capacity to recycle 40,000 end-of-life 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, passenger and commercial vehicles annually. These automated plants facilities will embrace a zero-pollution objective and will be built in accordance with all the legal & environmental standards prescribed by CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) and guidelines provided by MoRTH.

Speaking on the MoU, Sumit Issar, Managing Director of Mahindra Accelo said-

We are delighted to sign an MoU with the Government of Maharashtra and would like to acknowledge the proactive efforts being taken by the Government. Cero aims to create a network of world-class facilities across Maharashtra and India. Our centres will provide a platform for customers to scrap their vehicles in an environment-friendly manner and avail the benefits on purchase of newer vehicles which will be linked to Certificate of deposit – to be provided by Cero. From a sustainability point of view, through recycling of old vehicle, we aim to reduce India's dependence on Steel scrap imports and conservation of natural resources which go into the production of steel.

In other updates, the Maharashtra government has also recently partnered with Tata Motors to set up a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in the region. Tata's proposed scrappage centre will have the capacity of recycling up to 35,000 end-of-life passenger and commercial vehicles a year.
