Hyundai i20 and Creta Scores 3 Stars In Global NCAP Crash Tests

Hyundai’s popular cars, the i20 and Creta, have been recently crash tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) under the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign, and both the models have received an average of 3 stars for both child and adult occupants’ safety.

Both the tested vehicles were the entry-level variants of their respective model, equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and front seatbelt warning as standard. The i20 was also packed with ISOFIX child seat anchors. However, they miss out on electronic stability control and a three-point seatbelt for the middle-rear occupant.

As usual, the Hyundai i20 was crash tested at 64kmph, and the footwell area and body shell integrity were rated unstable. In fact, the bodyshell wasn’t capable of withstanding further loadings. It’s quite disheartening for us as i20’s structure was claimed to be lighter, stronger, and more reliable than the previous-gen model.

It scored 8.84 points out of 17 for adult occupants’ safety, offering adequate and good protection to the driver’s and front passenger’s head, respectively. On the other hand, the neck protection was ‘good’ for both the front adult passengers. However, the protection to the chest was ‘good’ for the co-driver and ‘weak’ for the driver. The protection for the driver and co-driver’s knee was rated ‘marginal’ as they could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the tranfascia tube.

For child occupants’ safety, the premium hatchback scratched 36.89 points out of 49. As per the GNCAP, the 3-year-old child dummy (installed forward-facing/FWF using ISOFIX) showed poor protection for the neck and good protection for the head. An 18-month-old child dummy in a rearward-facing (RWF) seat got good protection.

The Hyundai Creta scored 8 out of 17 in terms of adult passengers protection. It safeguarded the neck of both the front adult passengers and the chest & head of the front passenger quite well. But the driver’s head and chest protection was rated as ‘adequate’ and ‘marginal’, respectively. The knees showed marginal protection as they could impact dangerous structures behind the dashboard. The bodyshell and front footwell area was rated unstable.

On the other hand, the SUV scored 28.29 out of 49 for rear child occupant protection. The model tested was not equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounts and so, it showed poor chest & head protection for the FWF 3-year-old child dummy as it wasn’t able to control excessive forward movement. It also lacks a 3-point seatbelt for the rear middle seat. Interestingly, it showed good protection to the head and chest of the RWF 1.5-year old child dummy.
