BYD Teases First Plug-In Hybrid SUV For India; Launch Expected Soon

BYD has officially teased its first plug-in-hybrid SUV for the Indian market, and it is likely to be the Sealion 6 or Atto 2, marking the brand’s shift beyond its current EV-only lineup in the country.

The official teaser states that the upcoming SUV will feature the brand’s ‘DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV’ technology. Here, DM-i stands for “Dual Mode – intelligent’, essentially referring to a plug-in hybrid system where the petrol engine and electric motor work together. This delivers EV-like efficiency and lower running costs, along with the convenience of a combustion engine that helps eliminate range anxiety.

While BYD hasn’t yet shared the model-specific details, it is expected to be either the Atto 2 or the Sealon 6, as both of these SUVs have already been spotted testing on Indian soil. In fact, Sealon 6 was also showcased at the 2025 Auto Expo.

Globally, the Atto 2 PHEV uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, offered with two battery pack options: 7.8kWh and 18kWh, providing a combined WLTP range of 928km and 998km, respectively.

On the other hand, the Sealon 6 comes with 1.5-litre NA and turbo-petrol engine options, both of which are available with an 18.3 kWh and 26.6kWh battery. Of these, the 1.5 NA PHEV setup is exclusively FWD, delivering a combined output of 218PS and offering an NEDC-tested all-electric range of up to 140km. In contrast, the 1.5-lutre turbo-petrol PHEV comes with AWD as standard, delivering up to 344hp and an all-electric range of up to 128km.

Expect BYD to share more information in the coming days as we get closer to its launch.
