BMW Opens Bookings For X1 LWB; Launch On August 21

BMW has officially opened bookings for the X1 Long-Wheelbase (LWB) version ahead of its launch on August 21, 2026. It is essentially an elongated version of the standard X1 SUV, with a longer wheelbase for more cabin space. The X1’s electric version, the iX1, is already on sale in a long-wheelbase version.

BMW X1 LWB: Exterior Design and Dimensions

Originally designed for the Chinese market, the X1 LWB is 4,616mm in length, 1,845mm in width and 1,641mm in height, with a 2,802mm wheelbase. Compared to the standard X1, the X1 LWB version is 116mm longer, has a 110mm longer wheelbase, and is 11mm taller.

In terms of design, the SUV looks identical to the regular X1, featuring the same low-slung crossover-like profile, with key exterior bits including a large kidney grille, a chunkier front bumper with large air intakes, sleek LED headlights with two-piece LED DRLs, and L-shaped LED taillights.

The Chinese-spec X1 LWB gets both 19-inch and 20-inch wheel options. However, the Indian-spec version is likely to get smaller 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Interior and Features

Inside, the X1 LWB features the same dashboard layout as the regular X1; however, the rear passengers get more legroom and headroom. Its seat height has increased by 27mm, and the headrest cushions are 37mm wider. Boot space has also increased from 476 litres in the standard model to 540 litres in the LWB version.

Regarding features, it is likely to be equipped with amenities such as a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen with a Harman Kardon sound system, connected car technology, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, digital key support, auto park assist, powered front seats, automatic climate control, wireless smartphone charging, and a powered tailgate.

Engine and Gearbox

Expect the X1 LWB to get the same engine options as its standard model. For reference, the India-spec regular X1 is available with 136PS 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol (sDrive18i) and 150PS 2-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel (sDrive18d) engines. On the other hand, the China-spec X1 LWB gets a 204PS 2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol mill, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It has a top speed of 229 kmph.

BMW X1 LWB: Expected Price and Rivals

Since BMW will locally assemble the X1 LWB at its plant in Chennai, we expect it to be priced competitively. It is likely to command a slight premium over the standard X1, which currently retails between Rs 50.9 lakh and Rs 52.9 lakh (ex-showroom).

Once launched, it will be pitted against the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Audi Q3, neither of which offers a long-wheelbase version.
