Toyota Hilux Enters New Gen with ICE and Electric Versions

Toyota has unveiled the new-generation Hilux in Thailand, featuring a refreshed design, more feature-packed interiors, and, for the first time, a fully electric powertrain option.

Toyota Hilux Goes Electric

Much like its predecessor, the new-gen Hilux continues to be underpinned by Toyota’s IMV body-on-frame platform. However, in a first for Toyota’s ladder-frame vehicles, the pickup will also be offered with an all-electric powertrain. It features a 59.2 kWh battery pack, powering electric motors on both axles, delivering full-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) capabilities.

It claims a torque output of 205Nm at the front and 268.6Nm at the rear, ensuring strong off-road performance and instant torque response.

The new Hilux Electric has a payload capacity of 715kg, a towing capacity of 1600kg, and a WLTP range of just over 240km.

Petrol, Diesel Engines Retained

Alongside the new electric powertrain, the next-gen Hilux retains the outgoing 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engine options, with the latter featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system that provides assistance to the engine during acceleration.

Toyota claims that the ICE version has a payload capacity of one tonne and a towing capacity of 3,500kg.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Incoming

Toyota has confirmed that the new Hilux will get a hydrogen fuel cell variant in 2028, combining zero-emission performance with long driving range and quick refuelling capability.

Bolder, More Aggressive Look

Up front, the all-new Toyota Hilux features slimmer LED headlamps connected by a sleek trim strip bearing the bold ‘TOYOTA’ lettering. The ICE variants get a honeycomb-patterned grille, while the EV version opts for a mostly closed-off front panel for improved aerodynamics. Complementing these are functional air intakes on either side and a muscular skid plate at the bottom, emphasising its rugged appeal.

From the sides, the new Hilux differentiates itself through distinct alloy wheel designs and cladding finishes depending on the powertrain—black cladding for the ICE models and body-coloured ones for the EVs.

New-Gen Toyota Hilux

At the rear, vertically stacked tail lamps with C-shaped LED DRLs, prominent ‘TOYOTA’ branding on the tailgate, a black handle embossed with the ‘HILUX’ name, and a sturdy bumper complete the pickup’s bold and purposeful stance.

Feature-Packed Interiors

Inside, the new Hilux looks far more modern, featuring dual 12.3-inch displays, a new three-spoke steering wheel with ‘TOYOTA’ lettering, and a host of physical controls for key functions. Feature highlights include a wireless charger, connected car tech, ventilated front seats, 360° and multi-terrain cameras, OTA updates, and driver monitoring.

Toyota has also expanded its Safety Sense ADAS suite, adding features like Low-Speed Acceleration Suppression, Proactive Driving Assist, and an Emergency Driving Stop System.

Will It Be Launched In India?

Toyota will start launching the Hilux EV in select global markets from December 2025, followed by the ICE variants around mid-2026. Since the current Hilux is already on sale in India, the new-generation model is also expected to arrive here, likely as part of Toyota’s 15-model lineup planned for India by 2030.
