Maruti Baleno Secured 4-Star Safety Rating From Bharat NCAP

The Maruti Baleno has been crash-tested by the Bharat NCAP, and it has secured a respectable 4-star safety rating for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 3 stars for Child Occupant Protection (COP). BNCAP has tested both its dual-airbag and six-airbag variants. Here’s a detailed look at the results: –

ParameterBaleno (2-airbags variant)Baleno (6-airbags variant)
AOP24.04 out of 3226.52 out of 32
COP34.81 out of 4934.81 out of 49

Both variants achieved the same score in child protection, while the 6-airbag variant showed improved protection in side-impact scenarios.

Tested Variants

  • Base Rating (2 airbags): Delta AGS, Alpha AGS (2 airbags)
  • Optional Rating (6 airbags): Zeta AGS, Alpha AGS

Crash Test Performance

  • The 6-airbag variant of the Baleno includes side head curtain airbags, which are absent in the base variant. However, both versions are equipped with essential safety technologies like: Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Pedestrian Protection, Seat Belt Reminders for all seats, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.
  • Both variants recorded the same frontal offset deformable barrier score of 11.54 out of 16. However, in the side impact test, the 2-airbag variant scored 12.50, whereas the 6-airbag variant performed significantly better with a score of 14.99, thanks to the presence of curtain airbags.
  • This improvement highlights the importance of side head protection in enhancing occupant safety during side-impact collisions.

Maruti Baleno safety rating
  • Despite the difference in airbag count, both variants offered identical child safety performance. Each achieved a dynamic score of 16.81, a CRS installation score of 12.00, and a vehicle assessment score of 6.00, totalling 34.81 points.
  • The crash tests used Britax Roemer Baby Safe 3 with Base and Britax Roemer Trifix 2 child restraint systems, both of which showed good protection in front and side impacts.
  • Despite good CRS compatibility, Child Occupant Protection scores remain at 3 stars, indicating room for improvement.

With this Bharat NCAP rating, the Maruti Baleno strengthens its appeal in the premium hatchback segment. For safety-conscious buyers, the Zeta and Alpha variants with six airbags offer a significant edge in occupant protection, especially in side collisions.
