Jeep Compass Petrol and Trailhawk Diesel Discontinued In India

Jeep has discontinued all the petrol variants of the Compass, along with the Trailhawk 4×4 diesel variant in India. The SUV will now only be offered with the 170PS 2-litre turbocharged diesel engine option.

  • For those who aren’t aware, Jeep axed the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol-manual variants of the Compass in December last year. After that, the petrol engine was only offered with the DCT automatic gearbox. Unfortunately, even that option has been removed from its India lineup now because the petrol engine does not meet the new BS6 Phase 2 emissions standards that came into effect in April 2023.
  • In India, the petrol variants of the Jeep Compass played a significant role in its success, accounting for approximately 50-60 per cent of its total sales.
  • Globally, this 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine has already been replaced by a newer 1.3-litre unit. However, it remains uncertain whether the carmaker will introduce this new engine in India.
  • Currently, the Jeep Compass is available in four diesel variants, namely – Sport, Limited, Model-S, and Night Eagle Edition, priced between Rs 21.44 lakh to Rs 3.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

Commenting on this development, Jeep India said – “The Premium SUV segment continues to enjoy strong demand for diesel powertrain. Jeep India will continue to invest and develop its efficient state-of-the-art 2.0 L MultiJet Turbo Diesel powertrains offering superior torque, lower emissions and impressive fuel efficiency. Jeep India is committed to the market and has significant product plans for the future. We will continue to explore all possible engine and fuel options in line with the evolving market preferences to offer what is most relevant to our consumers.”

Author’s Take

Since the petrol variants accounted for a large portion of Compass’ sales, the company may face a notable decrease in its overall sales figures.
