With the constantly increasing fuel prices, the demand for CNG and electric vehicles is shooting up. While currently, the EVs have their own restrictions, CNG seems to be a more viable option for a wider section of the audience. And hence, many automakers including Tata Motors are aiming for this segment. As per a recent report, Tata could launch the CNG versions of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sub-4m sedan in January 2022. Unofficial bookings for both models have also begun at select dealerships for token amounts ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000.

Both Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG will get a factory-fitted CNG kit, coupled with their longing 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engines. With this, their power and torque figures will be reduced by a significant margin. For reference, the petrol-powered versions of both these Tata models deliver 83PS of maximum power and 113Nm of peak torque.
Unlike the petrol-only models, their CNG counterparts are likely to be offered only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Tata also offers the Tigor in electric guise, which delivers an ARAI-claimed range of 306km and is priced from Rs 11.99 lakh to Rs 13.14 lakh (ex-showroom).
While Tata hasn't shared any details on this matter yet, we expect the cleaner fuel to be limited to the Tiago and Tigor’s mid-spec trims. They’re likely to bear a premium of around Rs 60,000 over their corresponding petrol variants.
Currently, the Tata Tiago ranges from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.07 lakh, while the Tigor retails between Rs 5.67 lakh to Rs 7.84 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Delhi). Once launched, the Tiago will go up against the Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG and Hyundai Santro CNG, while the Tigor will lock horn with the Hyundai Aura CNG and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG.
