MoRTH Proposes New Norms To Improve Performance & Safety Perspectives Of Tyres

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification proposing compulsory standards for new tires. The draft states that the tires of cars, buses, and trucks must match the requirements of rolling resistance, wet grip, and rolling sound emissions, as specified in stage-II of the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) 142: 2019, which is being revised from time to time. Both domestic tire manufacturers and importers will have to follow the proposed mandatory norms.

These new measures aimed to enhance the performance & safety perspectives of the tires. Also, this will let the buyers make an informed decision.

For the people not in know, similar kind of rules for tires are already in place in Europe since 2016 and the Indian govt has been following the European model. Some of the previously implemented passenger safety regulations for 2-&-4-wheelers and BS6 emission standards have also been adopted from developed global models.

The draft states that the proposed norms will be mandatory from October 2021 for new tires. Meanwhile, the ministry has given an extra year for existing tire models to comply with the norms. That means the norms will be applicable for existing tire models from October 2022 onwards. The move is being observed as the first step towards a 'star rating' system of tires in India. However, if anyone has any suggestion/objections to these draft rules then they may send their comments to the Joint Secretary (MVL), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Transport Bhavan, Parliament Street, New Delhi-110001 or on the email: comments-morth@gov.in
