Volkswagen has started the bookings of the automatic variants of the Polo and Vento. One can book the AT variants through both online and offline means. Deliveries of these two models will commence from 15 September 2020.
Both Volkswagen hatchback and sedan will get the 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox which will be available only with the GT variant of Polo and Highline Plus trim of Vento. Let's have a look at the pricing of AT-equipped variants of both Volkswagen cars:-
Automatic Variant Price | |
Polo GT TSI | Rs 9.67 lakh |
Vento Highline Plus | Rs 12.99 lakh |
*All prices, ex-showroom.
The Polo GT TSI AT carries the premium of Rs 1.78 lakh compared to the Highline Plus TSI manual variant, while the Vento AT costs Rs 2 lakh more than its manual counterpart.
Engine
Automatic variants of both models will be equipped with a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine which produces 110PS/175Nm of peak output. Here the TSI stands for 'turbocharged stratified injection'.
Earlier, these Volkswagen cars were available with 7-speed DSG (direct-shift gearbox) which is basically an electronically controlled dual-clutch automatic gearbox in a transaxle design. In both cars, this DSG gearbox used to come with a 1.2-litre TSI engine which was discontinued after the BS6 update.
Mileage
Volkswagen has also shared the ARAI-claimed mileage values of both cars. Volkswagen claims that the Polo AT will return a fuel economy of 16.47 kmpl. The Vento AT, on the other hand, will be able to run about 16.35 km in one litre.
Are there any other changes?
Apart from the introduction of the automatic transmission, both models do not feature any other changes. AT variants of both the cars will proceed with the features of their corresponding manual trims that mainly includes 16-inch alloy wheels, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink compatibility, auto-dimming IRVM, 4-speakers, steering-mounted controls, cruise control, automatic wipers, auto climate control, rear AC vents, power-folding, and adjustable ORVMS, etc. Additionally, the Vento sedan also gets features like LED headlamps, DRLs, front side airbags, and leather upholstery.
In terms of features, the GT TSI variant of Polo is identical to the Highline Plus variant. However, it gets some sporty aesthetics to highlight its GT DNA.
Competition
The VW Polo locks horns with Toyota Glanza, Maruti Baleno, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz, and Hyundai Elite i20. Here, the Polo is the only car that offers a torque converter automatic gearbox whereas Baleno, Glanza, and Jazz get the CVT option while i20 is only available in manual variants nowadays.
The Vento competes with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Toyota Yaris, and Skoda Rapid in which the Verna is the only car that offers three different kinds of an automatic gearbox, including CVT with 1.5-litre NA petrol, AT with 1.5-litre diesel unit, and DCT with 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. The Honda City and Toyota Yaris, on the other hand, offer CVT in the form of an automatic gearbox option. The Ciaz comes with torque converter choice while Rapid only offers a manual gearbox as a standard unit.
