MoRTH Proposes Mandatory V2V Communication From Oct’28

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification to make vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems mandatory on all new L-, M- and N-category vehicles from 1st October 2028, including 2-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles. This will help in reducing road accidents, improving response time after crashes and ensuring quicker medical and rescue assistance.

As of now, the draft notification is open for public comments for 30 days, after which the ministry will review the feedback before issuing the final notification.

What Is Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communication?

As the name suggests, this technology enables vehicles to wirelessly share real-time information such as speed, position/location, direction and acceleration/deacceleration status. This helps vehicles predict potential hazards that may not be visible to the driver, thus helping avoid accidents.

Let’s understand this from an example: Imagine car A is approaching from the left, and car B is approaching from the right to a junction. In this situation, they can’t see each other. But with V2V, both cars will exchange location and speed data and detect a possible collision. And your car will alert you or even brake automatically to avoid a crash.

Unlike ADAS, which relies on radar/sensors and cameras, V2V technology enables communication between vehicles using Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, which operates on standard cellular network bands in the 5.875GHz to 5.925GHz frequency. The Department of Telecommunications delicensed this spectrum on June 10, 2026.

Vehicles offering this technology must adhere to the AIS-230 regulation.

Models With V2V Feature

Currently, several mass-market offerings such as Mahindra BE6, XEV 9e and XEV 9s come equipped with the necessary hardware required for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. It is expected that the Indian carmaker will enable this feature via a software update in the near future to make your vehicles safer.
