2020 Mahindra Thar Launched, Prices Start From Rs 9.80 Lakh

The all-new Mahindra Thar has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 9.80 lakh. Mahindra has also started accepting its bookings for a token amount of Rs 21,000. The deliveries will begin by the end of this month.

2020 Mahindra Thar: Powertrain

For the very first time, Mahindra has given the option of both petrol and diesel engine with Thar off-roader, and interestingly both the engine are available with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions choices.

The gasoline motor is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit that churns out 150PS of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque (320Nm with the automatic gearbox). On the other hand, the diesel engine is a 2.2-liter, turbocharged unit that produces 130PS and 320Nm.

Being an off-roader, the new Thar gets a 4×4 drivetrain with a mechanically locking rear differential and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio as standard.

Variant-wise Pricing

The second-generation Thar is offered in two trims: AX (Adventure) and LX (Lifestyle). The nature of the variants is well defined by the names. The AX is designed especially for the hardcore off-roading lovers whereas the LX is equipped to suit general family needs.

You can also choose between three rooftop options: a fixed soft top, convertible soft top, and a fixed hardtop.

Again as an introductory change, the Thar SUV gets two seating layouts. The 4 seater variants offer two front-facing seats in the rear, making it suitable for the family purposes whereas the 6-seating configuration gets two front and four side-facing seats in the rear.

The top-spec LX trim of Mahindra Thar comes loaded with a bunch of comforts and convenience features like LED DRLs, LED taillamps, remote keyless entry with central locking, automatic AC, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, roof-mounted speakers (six), steering-mounted audio & telephony controls, a new instrument cluster with a colored multi-info display (MID), washable cabin, tilt-adjustable steering, cruise control, electrically adjustable ORVMs, height-adjustable driver seat, lumbar adjustment for the front seats, front power windows, day/night IRVM, rear demister (with hard top only), bottle holder in front doors, etc. 

The infotainment system of the new Thar also displays adventurer stats like wheel angle, torque, roll, pitch, gear indicator, etc, which will be really helpful during off-roading.

Mahindra has improved the safety kit as well. It gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist (BA), reverse parking sensors, a high-speed alert system, seat belt reminder as standard. Additionally, the LX variant also gets the speed sensing front door locks, anti-theft alarm, electronic stability program with roll over mitigation, tire pressure monitoring system with tire direction indicator, ISOFIX Child seats (available in AX(O), and a roll cage (available in AX(O).

Colors Options

The new Thar is offered in a total of six color options: Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black, Rocky Beige, and Aquamarine.

Off-roading characteristics

The new Thar features a lot of off-roading biased characteristics that include tubeless all-terrain tires as standard, 650 mm water wading capacity, 4×4 drivetrain, both electronic and mechanical locking differentials, an approach angle of 42 degrees, departure angle of 37 degrees, breakover angle of 27 degrees and ground clearance of up to 226mm. 

Rivals

Currently, the Mahindra Thar doesn’t have any direct competitors. However, soon the new-gen Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny will join the tribe.
