Volkswagen Virtus Series Production Begins Ahead Of Launch In May 2022

  • Pre-launch bookings are already underway.
  • Launch expected in March 2022.
  • Will be offered in two broad trims: Dynamic and Performance Line.
  • Prices are likely to start from around Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

Volkswagen India has begun the series production of its upcoming Virtus mid-size sedan at its Chakan (Pune) plant. Its pre-launch bookings are already underway and it’s expected to go on sale in May 2022.

For those who aren’t aware, Virtus is Volkswagen’s second offering under its India 2.0 business plan after the Taigun. It is based on the highly localized MQB-A0-IN platform that also underpins some VW-Skoda cars, including its sibling rival Skoda Slavia.

Similar to the VW Taigun, the Virtus will be offered in Dynamic and Performance (GT) line trims. The Dynamic line variants will be powered by a 115PS 1-litre TSI engine, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. On the other hand, the Performance line trims will get a 150PS 1.5-litre TSI engine with Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) and 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Unlike the Slavia, it will miss out on the manual transmission option.

Features onboard will include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, connected car tech, auto AC, rear AC vents, ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charger, an 8-speaker sound system, up to six airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, and rear parking sensors with a camera. Expect Volkswagen to price the Virtus between Rs 10.50 lakh to Rs 17.5 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Ciaz, and its Skoda cousin.
