Volkswagen has officially confirmed a sub-4m SUV for the Indian market, which will be launched sometimes in 2027. The upcoming SUV will share its powertrain and platform with the Skoda Kylaq (MQB-A0-IN) and will be manufactured locally. Indian and European engineering teams are developing it.
Following the discontinuation of the Ameo compact sedan and the Polo hatchback several years ago, this upcoming SUV will mark Volkswagen’s re-entry into one of the largest passenger vehicle segments. While the Skoda Kylaq has turned out to be a successful product for the brand, it will be interesting to see if VW can replicate this success, especially with players like the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon already in the game. However, we believe competitive pricing and its unique selling points could be key to gaining traction among buyers.
As of now, Volkswagen has a compact SUV in its global portfolio called “Tera”. And we expect the upcoming India-bound SUV to borrow some design cues from it. What we also know is that it is likely to be powered by the Kylaq’s 1-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, with manual and automatic gearbox options.Â

While it will be too early to comment on its features, we expect it to be generously loaded, with modern-day amenities like a sunroof, a large touchscreen infotainment system with connected-car tech, a digital cluster, powered front seats with ventilation, six airbags, and an ADAS suite.
Volkswagen is expected to price the upcoming SUV between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom). If priced competitively, it could help Volkswagen establish a strong presence in India’s highly competitive sub-4m SUV segment. Its success will also depend on how well it differentiates itself from established rivals. More details are expected to emerge closer to its 2027 launch.
