Tesla Model Y Spied Testing In India; Launch Imminent?

While Tesla continues to negotiate tariff concessions for its India entry, the facelifted Model Y has been spotted testing on Indian roads, suggesting the brand is actively preparing for its local debut, with the Model Y likely to arrive in its latest iteration, which was revealed in January this year.

For those unaware, the Model Y is a compact all-electric crossover positioned between the Model 3 sedan and the larger Model X in Tesla’s global lineup. Built on the same platform as the Model 3, it offers a perfect blend of performance, efficiency, and everyday practicality, making it one of the brand’s most successful models to date. In terms of styling, the Model Y draws inspiration from both the Cybertruck and the upcoming Cybercab, especially in newer versions seen abroad. The front design features a full-width LED light bar, updated sleeker headlamps, and a new forward-facing camera integrated neatly into the front air intake, likely aiding Tesla’s Full Self-Driving tech stack. While retaining its clean and minimalist look, Tesla has subtly enhanced its road presence and functionality.

Inside, the Model Y facelift features the same minimalist interior design, with the familiar 15.4-inch infotainment unit taking the centre stage. The other key bits and features include: –

  • An 8-inch display on the centre console for rear passengers
  • Customisable ambient lighting
  • Ventilated seats
  • Conventional indicator stalk that replaces controversial button controls
  • Double-Glazed Acoustic Glass for a quieter cabin experience
  • UV-reflecting panoramic roof
  • Powered rear seat recline – fold/unfold electrically via boot buttons
  • Rear parcel shelf

The Tesla Model Y is available in two trims: RWD and Long-Range AWD. With the former claiming 719km of range on a single charge, the latter returns 662km (as per China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). The brand claims it can complete the century sprint in just 4.3 seconds for the AWD trim, while the single-motor RWD version takes 5.9 seconds for the same.

Tesla has already signed a five-year lease for a showroom in Mumbai and is actively searching for a suitable location in Delhi. Its Indian arm, Tesla India Motor & Energy, has also started recruiting talent for various roles in customer support, sales, and product development.

Initially, Tesla plans to introduce its vehicles in India as fully built imported units (CBUs). However, instead of immediately investing in a new factory, the company is considering contract manufacturing through local partners. For retail and ownership experience, Tesla will stick to its direct-to-consumer model, managing its own showrooms and also setting up its proprietary Supercharger network for EV charging.
