Tata Tiago CNG Teased For The First Time; Launch Expected Soon

Highlights: –

  • Tata Motors will soon initiate its green journey with CNG iterations of Tiago and Tigor. They are likely to launch in the coming days.
  • They will continue to get the ongoing 1.2-liter petrol engine; albeit with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
  • CNG is likely to be limited with select variants of both models.
  • Design and features list likely to remain unchanged.
  • The CNG trims of these Tata cars will surely command a significant premium over their corresponding variants.
  • Unofficial bookings are already underway.

There's no secret that Tata Motors has been working on the CNG iterations of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sub-4m sedan for a long time. And now, the company has finally teased the hatchback. Its unofficial bookings have already commenced at select dealerships for a token amount of Rs 5,000. It is likely to hit the market later this month along with the Tigor CNG.

Both the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG will be powered by the same BS6-compliant 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engine as their regular models; albeit with a factory-fitted CNG kit. While this gasoline mill delivers 83PS of maximum power and 113Nm of peak torque, its output will decrease by around 15-20 percent when running on CNG. It is expected to come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a fuel efficiency of over 32 km/kg.

Save from the greener powertrain, no other changes are expected. Both the Tigor and Tiago CNG will be the same as their standard counterparts.

We believe Tata will offer the lower and mid-spec variants of Tiago and Tigor with the optional CNG kit. They are expected to command a premium of around Rs 60,000 over their corresponding petrol-only variants. For reference, the Tiago currently ranges from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.07 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and rivals the Hyundai Santro and Maruti WagonR, while the Tigor retails from Rs 5.67 lakh to Rs 7.84 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and fight out against the Hyundai Aura and Maruti Dzire.
