Tata Tiago CNG: A Competitive Edge Over Its Rivals

Tata Motors is revolutionising the market for CNG cars in India. Following the introduction of twin-cylinder technology in 2023, the Indian carmaker has now introduced the industry-first automatic transmission option for the CNG versions of the Tata Tiago and Tigor duo, providing them with an edge over their rivals.

In this thread, have a look at the parameters in which the Tata Tiago CNG does better than its key competitors – Maruti Celerio CNG, WagonR CNG and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG: –

Direct CNG Start

The Tiago CNG can be started and run directly on the CNG mode without needing to switch from petrol mode first. This enhances convenience and efficiency by eliminating the need for any additional steps or delays.

Usable Boot Space

The Tata Tiago benefits from the brand’s signature twin-cylinder technology that employs two small CNG cylinders instead of a single large unit, freeing up some space in the boot for your luggage, unlike any other CNG cars in its competition.

Two-Pedal Convenience

The Tiago CNG, along with its sedan iteration, the Tigor, are the first CNG cars in India to get the convenience of an automatic gearbox option (5-speed AMT).

This transmission comes mated to a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 73.5PS and 95Nm when running on CNG.

Safety

When crash tested in 2020 (on older crash test norms), the Tiago secured a 4-start safety rating. In contrast, its rivals have lower crash test ratings. Furthermore, it also prioritises users’ protection with CNG-specific safety features like leakage-proof materials, thermal incident protection, single advanced ECU, and leak detection failure.

Wider Lineup, More Intuitive Experience

The CNG version of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios comes in the entry-level Magna and Sportz variants. Likewise, Maruti Suzuki offers CNG variants in the LXI and VXI trims of the Celerio and WagonR. However, the Tiago CNG is available in both lower and higher-end variants, including its NRG version, offering a premium experience unmatched by other models. Having said that, it gets additional features like a rear wiper & washer, automatic AC, tyre pressure monitoring system, cooled glovebox, push-button start/stop, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and 8 speakers.
