Tata Eyes Expansion Of Racer Performance Brand

Tata Motors is planning to expand its Racer brand portfolio to include more performance-oriented models. The carmaker introduced the Altroz Racer last month, and depending on its demand and market interest the Racer brand could be expanded to include high-performance EVs. This means Tata Motors could position the Racer brand similarly to Hyundai India’s N-Line performance arm. This also suggests that the upcoming Altroz EV could also be introduced in a hot hatch version.

This is the second time when Tata Motors is considering a performance brand. Back in 2018, the company introduced JTP-badged, high-performance versions of the Tiago and Tigor. These models were developed by JP Special Vehicles (JTSV), a 50:50 joint venture between Tata and Jayem Automotives. However, due to low demand for these niche products, they were discontinued by April 2020 when BS6 norms were implemented.

Currently, Hyundai is the only mass-market brand in India with its own dedicated N-Line performance arm. The N Line series includes sportier, performance-oriented versions of existing models, such as the i20 hatchback, Venue compact SUV, and Creta midsize SUV. These models offer enhanced driving dynamics, distinctive styling, and additional features that cater to enthusiasts seeking a more spirited driving experience. Hyundai’s success with the N Line has set a benchmark in the Indian market, demonstrating the potential demand for performance-oriented variants in the mass-market segment.
