Tata Considering CNG and Hybrid For Bigger Cars

Tata Motors is considering CNG and Hybrid technology for cars over 4 meters to meet the stringent upcoming CAFE III norms. These norms require carmakers to reduce fleet-level emissions further, pushing brands to diversify into alternative fuel and electrified technologies. While the carmaker already offers CNG with its smaller (sub-4m) models like Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz and Nexon, hybrid technology is currently absent from Tata’s entire product lineup.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, revealed that the company is closely examining the 4.3-meter segment (Tata Curvv and Sierra) and may introduce CNG and hybrid powertrains in the near future.

In recent years, we have seen that Maruti Suzuki has expanded its CNG portfolio into the premium, mid-size SUV segment with models like Grand Vitara and Victoris, indicating growing demand for CNG in larger vehicles. This trend is mainly driven by the need to reduce the overall ownership cost amid skyrocketing fuel prices, shrinking diesel market and intensifying competition. Tata has also strengthened its CNG portfolio significantly in recent times. The brand sold over 1.2 lakh CNG cars last year, and the volume is expected to cross the 1.5 lakh mark this calendar year.

Regarding hybrids, Tata states that they are technologically prepared, but are currently studying the market to ensure competitiveness. Having said that, hybrids typically require a careful cost balance, especially in segments where CNG and EVs are already strong contenders.

If given a node, the hybrid tech will be introduced in cars/SUVs measuring over 4 meters, possibly starting with the Sierra and Harrier. This will help Tata position its products against rivals like Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Hyryder, which offer a wide powertrain options, including mild-hybrid petrol, CNG and self-charging strong-hybrid. In fact, we could see strong-hybrid technology in the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos as well in the near future.
