Tata Motors has officially unveiled the Altroz iTurbo, which is a performance-based version of homegrown maker's premium hatch. It is scheduled to launch on 22nd January 2021. With this, the Altroz will be available with three engine options: 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and the newly introduced 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which will fundamentally position it against the Hyundai i20 Turbo and Volkswagen Polo TSI. But is this new hot-hatch good enough to take on these rivalries? Let's find out: –
1. Engine Specification

- Compared to its competitors, the Altroz iTurbo gets a bigger displacement engine.
- Its 110PS power output is par with the Volkswagen Polo TSI, but 10PS less than i20.
- The Polo is the torquiest car here, whereas the Altroz iTurbo develops the least torque among all.
- In terms of transmission options, the Altroz iTurbo will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox only, at least in the initial phase. A DCT (dual-clutch transmission) automatic gearbox is expected to be introduced in near future. Meanwhile, the i20 & Polo, both cars get the option of a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed torque converter automatic unit respectively. However, if you want a conventional manual model, then Altroz and Polo is your only option. Though the i20 gets a manual gearbox but without the clutch pedal. Hyundai calls it an intelligent-manual transmission (iMT).
- As far as the mileage is concerned, the Altroz iTurbo is in line with Polo's TSI engine. But once again, the i20 is the most frugal car here.
