Latest Update: Tata Altroz iTurbo hot-hatch has been launched in India at an introductory price range of Rs 7.74 – Rs 8.85 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Click here to know more about it in detail.

Tata Motors has officially unveiled the Altroz iTurbo, which is a performance-based version of homegrown maker's premium hatch. It is scheduled to launch on 22nd January 2021. With this, the Altroz will be available with three engine options: 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and the newly introduced 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which will fundamentally position it against the Hyundai i20 Turbo and Volkswagen Polo TSI. But is this new hot-hatch good enough to take on these rivalries?  Let's find out: –

  • Compared to its competitors, the Altroz iTurbo gets a bigger displacement engine.
  • Its 110PS power output is par with the Volkswagen Polo TSI, but 10PS less than i20.
  • The Polo is the torquiest car here, whereas the Altroz iTurbo develops the least torque among all.
  • In terms of transmission options, the Altroz iTurbo will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox only, at least in the initial phase. A DCT (dual-clutch transmission) automatic gearbox is expected to be introduced in near future. Meanwhile, the i20 & Polo, both cars get the option of a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed torque converter automatic unit respectively. However, if you want a conventional manual model, then Altroz and Polo is your only option. Though the i20 gets a manual gearbox but without the clutch pedal. Hyundai calls it an intelligent-manual transmission (iMT).
  • As far as the mileage is concerned, the Altroz iTurbo is in line with Polo's TSI engine. But once again, the i20 is the most frugal car here.

  • Talking about dimensions, all three cars have certain advantages over each other. While the Tata Altroz stands out in terms of height & boot space against the Hyundai i20 & VW Polo, the Korean offering has a longer wheelbase. It is also wider than both the cars, and have slightly more ground clearance.
  • The only point where the Polo has a real edge is the turning radius. The less the turning radius is, the more easily you can manoeuvre or take U-turn in tight areas. Polo's tyre width is also 10mm greater than both the cars which certainly improves the grip.
