Suzuki has confirmed that it is developing a new range-extended hybrid powertrain with plug-in capability for its compact cars. This proposed system is called “REEV LIGHT”.
Series Hybrid System With Plug-in Capabilities
As we mentioned a few years ago, Maruti Suzuki is considering introducing its series hybrid systems for its compact cars, which is likely to make its debut with the new-gen Fronx. Now, this new powertrain is expected to use the same hybrid series technology, combining an electric motor-driven setup with an internal combustion engine that can act as a generator, while the plug-in capability will allow the battery to also be charged externally when required so that buyers won’t have to depend solely on charging for longer journeys.
Revealed at the Technology Strategy Briefing 2026, Suzuki stated that “For compact cars, we are preparing a series HEV that generates electricity from fuel and drives on the motor, and we will further evolve this series HEV by adding external charging capability and a right-sized battery to create a light range extender. It will become a “REEV Light” that does not carry an oversized battery yet lets you drive without worrying about the remaining charge.”
While Suzuki hasn’t revealed whether the REEV Light will use the Z12E engine, previous reports suggest that the brand’s 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z12E engine could serve as a generator in its series hybrid system. So, if introduced, the Swift, Dzire, Baleno and the facelifted Fronx could benefit from this plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) technology. As of now, Maruti Suzuki uses Toyota’s series-parallel hybrid technology in its mid-size and high-end offerings.
Regarding battery capacity, Suzuki states that “We will pursue a “lean-battery” approach, matching battery capacity to how customers actually use their vehicles, and thereby holding down resource use and vehicle weight”. In the REEV Light system, the battery can be charged externally for shorter trips within its electric range, while the engine can generate electricity to power the vehicle on longer journeys.
Suzuki estimates that the REEV Light series hybrid could reduce CO₂ emissions by about 29% against its stated 2022 reference. That is roughly 300kg less CO₂ per 10,000 km.
New Turbo-Petrol Engine Confirmed For India
Apart from its range extender plug-in hybrid, Suzuki has also confirmed the development of a new-generation direct-injection turbo engine for the Indian market that combines high efficiency with powerful driving.
Mono-fuel CNG
The Japanese carmaker stated that its current CNG vehicles use a bi-fuel system combining petrol and CNG for driving range, but the brand is now studying a simpler mono-fuel system running on CNG alone, which could be introduced in future vehicles.
ADAS Will Be Standard
Suzuki has announced its plan to make select ADAS features like auto emergency braking and lane departure warning as standard fitment across its model lineup in India, while comfort functions like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist will be optional. The system will use high-resolution cameras and AI chips, with DMS/OMS cameras integrated into the ADAS setup to reduce costs. More details here.
