Semiconductor Shortage Will Impact MG Cars Deliveries

The nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic is about to complete one year but still, we haven't been completely overcome by its effects. And the global shortage of semiconductors continues to inundate the auto industry. After Ford, Mahindra, and Bajaj Auto, MG Motors has now announced that they have also been hit by the short supply of semiconductors and as result deliveries of new cars will be delayed.

one year of lockdown

From headlights, infotainment, and mirrors to complex functions like ADAS tech, a semiconductor plays a huge role in the electronics of a car, and the shortage of one can be troubling. The carmaker has stated that the delivery timeline for existing bookings across all variants is estimated to be between 2-3 months. Buyers have been requested to contact their concerned dealership to know the estimated delivery timelines for their bookings.

As of now, Morris Garages has four models in its India line-up – Hector, Hector Plus, ZS EV, and the Gloster. The brand will soon introduce the petrol-powered version of the ZS SUV which could be named 'Astor'.

Reason for semiconductor's shortage

COVID-19 epidemic drove unpredictable interruptions in the global supply chain and the demand for semiconductors from non-automotive sectors like electronics and telecom companies experienced a huge surge in business thanks to the changing work environment and demand for the faster internet (5G connectivity). And the automobile industry is not the biggest sector for semiconductors that's why it is not on the highest priority list for chip manufacturers. As per a report of 2019 Global Semiconductor Demand, the auto industry has only a 12.20% market share, whereas the communication and computer sectors have a total of 61.5% serving.
