Royal Enfield Working On Two Electric Projects, Details Revealed

Royal Enfield is embracing the electric future by actively developing two new all-electric products, codenamed L1A and L1K, using their own EV architecture, with a dedicated EV team occupying an entire floor at the brand’s corporate office in Chennai.

  • Going by the media reports, the L1A is expected to be the lightest vehicle architecture inspired by the iconic Flying Flea motorcycle, used by the British Army during the World War 2. For those unaware, the Royal Enfield Flying Flea was a lightweight motorcycle that could be dropped by parachute on the battlefield.
  • Expect Royal Enfiled to use the Flying Flea nomenclature for its entry-level electric motorcycle targeted for urban commutes. It is likely to be a lightweight machine with a single-seater configuration. It is expected to make an official debut sometime next year.
  • Speaking of the L1K, it is anticipated to be an adventure off-roader.
  • Royal Enfield is also developing new powertrains for these electric offerings.
  • Reports suggest they will likely deliver a nominal output of around 9 kW (12 PS), with the peak power meandering roughly at 16 kW (21.5 PS). Furthermore, they could get a 60-120 volt battery architecture.
  • Royal Enfield is planning a production of approximately 60,000 units per annum for the L1A and L1K products, which will likely be doubled in 2026. It’s also worth noting that the bike maker has already secured land in Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu, for its upcoming EV facility. But till then, the EVs are expected to be produced in their Orgadam facility.
  • Both these motorcycles will also be exported overseas.
